HB 1060 to legalize human composting was introduced in Maryland's House of Delegates in February, 2023.

On March 20, 2023, Maryland House of Delegates passed HB 1060 – Cremation – Natural Organic Reduction – Regulation, to legalize human composting. The Maryland House formally transferred possession of the bill to the Maryland Senate but there were not enough votes in Maryland’s Senate Finance Committee to move the bill forward to a vote.

We will share updates about future bills in our newsletter.

Get Involved

Even though 2023 legislation did not move forward in the Senate, it may still help to contact your Maryland State Senator to let them know that human composting is an issue that’s important to you. To make it easier for you, we’ve pulled together an email template and have information how to find your legislators’ contact info.

If you’re interested in learning more about the legislative process, we designed a legislative advocacy page with resources and talking points to give you an idea of what it takes to legalize human composting.
