Planning Ahead for Transportation

Recompose will coordinate the safe and respectful transport of your body into our care

Transportation arrangements to Recompose are dependent on location.

Within Our Service Area

Once your family notifies us of your death, Recompose will arrange transportation from the place of death into our care. Transportation to Recompose is complimentary from anywhere within our service area, which currently includes all of Washington State and the Portland metro area.

Outside Our Service Area

Many Recompose clients come to us from out of state, and our team has extensive experience guiding clients through the process. We coordinate transportation with our trusted partners or a local funeral home of your choosing to ensure safe and seamless care. Our transportation partners or your selected funeral home will arrange for pickup at the place of death and ensure safe transfer to Recompose.

The cost of transportation to Recompose from outside our service area is determined and billed by our transportation partners or the local funeral home you choose to work with. Please contact our team for transportation cost estimates at precompose@recompose.life or (206) 800-8733.

Using a Local Funeral Home for Transportation

Some members choose to set up transport arrangements in advance with a local funeral home. If you’re exploring this option, we’ve compiled tips and guidance to help you select a funeral home that feels right for you.

It is important to note that human composting cannot be performed on embalmed bodies. So while most funeral homes are experienced with transportation, they may not be familiar with transporting an unembalmed body.

Approaching a Funeral Home
  • You may want to start the conversation by saying something like, “I have selected a funeral home specializing in human composting in Seattle to handle my future death care services. I am interested in learning if you will be able to transport my body to Seattle after I die. An important factor is that my body cannot be embalmed.”
  • It can be helpful to look for a funeral home that accommodates sustainable funeral practices like green burial or alkaline hydrolysis.
  • It can also be helpful to look for a funeral home that works with Jewish communities. Some Jewish funeral practices prohibit embalming so they may be more familiar with preferences against embalming.
  • Some states have embalming guidelines. Often, they are required to allow exceptions for religious or belief preferences.
  • Some funeral homes have guidelines that bodies must be embalmed before they are transported. Some funeral home may say embalming is “required.” This often is their internal policy rather than a state law.
  • Funeral homes are welcome to contact Recompose directly if they have questions at services@recompose.life.
Once You Find a Funeral Home
  • Give the funeral home Recompose’s contact information: 4 S Idaho St, Seattle, WA 98134, services@recompose.life
  • Share the funeral home’s information with Recompose and loved ones.
