Recompose will coordinate the safe and respectful transport of your body into our care
Transportation arrangements to Recompose are dependent on location.
Within Our Service Area
Once your family has notified us of your death, Recompose will arrange for the transport of your body from the place of death into our care. Transportation to Recompose is complimentary from anywhere within our service area. Our current service area encompasses all of Washington State and the Portland metro area.
Outside Our Service Area
Many Recompose clients come to us from out of state, and our team has extensive experience guiding clients through the process. We will help your loved ones find a funeral home in your area to coordinate transportation. The local funeral home will manage the pickup of your body at the place of death and ensure its safe delivery to Recompose.
While not required, some members set up transport arrangements in advance with their local funeral home. For those looking for tips on how to select a local funeral home for this need, we’ve compiled a list to help with your search.
Selecting a Local Funeral Home
It is important to note that human composting cannot be performed on embalmed bodies. So while most funeral homes are experienced with transportation, they may not be familiar with transporting an unembalmed body.
- When approaching a funeral home, you may want to start the conversation by saying something like, “I have selected a funeral home specializing in human composting in Seattle to handle my future death care services. I am interested in learning if you will be able to transport my body to Seattle after I die. An important factor is that my body cannot be embalmed.”
- It can be helpful to look for a funeral home that accommodates sustainable funeral practices like green burial or alkaline hydrolysis.
- It can also be helpful to look for a funeral home that works with Jewish communities. Some Jewish funeral practices prohibit embalming so they may be more familiar with preferences against embalming.
- Some states have embalming guidelines. Often, they are required to allow exceptions for religious or belief preferences.
- Some funeral homes have guidelines that bodies must be embalmed before they are transported. When a funeral home tells you embalming is “required,” typically this is their internal policy rather than a state law.
- Funeral homes are welcome to contact Recompose directly if they have questions at services@recompose.life.
