Isabel Haydee (Montes) Kokenos
March 29, 1949 – September 26, 2026
Isabel Haydee (Montes) Kokenos, 77, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, in Seattle, Washington. Isabel lived defiantly with Parkinson’s for over 14 years, never losing her humor along the way.
She was born on March 29, 1949, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Juan Montes and Isabel Cardona. Raised primarily on the island with her brother Juan, they moved to Chesterton, Indiana when she was 16, later graduating from Liberty Township High School. She then attended Purdue University, where she met and married James “Jim” Kokenos. His draft into the US Army led them to the
Pacific Northwest. Falling in love with Seattle, it became her forever home. Isabel and Jim enjoyed 9 years of marriage, including the birth of their only child, Danae.
She worked in banking and later as a concierge and admin before retiring. But Isabel’s first true passion was sewing. Already a talented, self-taught seamstress, she went back to school to refine her skills, earning a degree in Apparel Design & Development from Seattle Central Community College.
Isabel is survived by her daughter Danae Kokenos. In lieu of flowers, Isabel would love if you made a donation to the Seattle Animal Shelter, where she adopted multiple furry companions over her life.
