Darrell Alvin Lowe

February 29, 1936 – September 7, 2025

Darrell Alvin Lowe, 89, of Issaquah, Washington, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025.

Born on February 29, 1936, in Manhattan, Kansas, Darrell was the son of Alvin and Esther Lowe. Darrell graduated from Garden City High School and went on to study Mechanical Engineering at Kansas State University. On January 26, 1958, Darrell married the love of his life, Elsie Livonia Lowe, in Garden City, Kansas, beginning a partnership that spanned nearly seven decades.

Following his longtime passion for flight, Darrell earned a private pilot’s license and began his career working on the Atlas and Centaur missile programs. In 1968, Darrell joined GE Aircraft Engines, working in flight test at Edwards Air Force Base. One of the highlights of his career came in 1974, when he and his family moved to France. There he worked with CFMI on the development of the CFM56 aircraft engine, a professional milestone and a treasured personal experience for his family. Upon returning to the United States in 1979, Darrell worked closely with Boeing to support the installation and testing of GE engines on both military and commercial aircraft. He retired from GE in 1998 after a distinguished and fulfilling career.

Beyond his professional life, Darrell served at Aldersgate United Methodist Church as head of the Administrative Board and co-chair of the building committee. He also gave his time and leadership to the Northwest United Methodist Foundation (now Faith Foundation), where he served on the Board and as president from 2001-2013. Darrell volunteered often at Habitat for Humanity and Lazy F Camp and Retreat Center, living out his values of service and stewardship.

For fun, Darrell loved skiing and spending time with family and friends on Hood Canal; boating, crabbing, blowing up fireworks, and watching the birds and sea life. An Eagle Scout, he was proud to be the father of two Eagle Scout sons. Usually a generous man, Darrell could be highly competitive when it came to sharing his peanut brittle.

Darrell’s legacy will be his quiet determination, his love of learning and flight, and his devotion to family, faith, and community. He is survived by his wife Livonia, sons Phillip and David (Melissa), grandchildren Daniel, Kaitlin, Zachary (Autumn), Kieran (Anna) and Alex, and the extended family and friends who shared his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Esther Lowe, and his siblings, Lorrin Ernest Lowe and Lela Kay Lowe Clutz.

A service to celebrate Darrell’s life was held September 27 at 2:00 PM in Bellevue at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Following the service, family and friends were invited to share memories at a reception in Friendship Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity (206 453-2950) or Communities of Belonging, a local mission Darrell encouraged (206 605-5351).
