Soil donated to the nonprofit conservation organization will support restoration along the Deschutes River outside Olympia, Washington
We’re pleased to announce a new partnership with Olympia Ecosystems, a nonprofit conservation organization with a mission to protect and restore the diverse ecosystems in and around Olympia, Washington.
Founded in 2014, OlyEcosystems has conserved over 400 acres within the Olympia and Lower Deschutes River region. Powered by public and private donations and community volunteers, the nonprofit organization protects, preserves, and restores ecologically significant areas.
Soil Donation
Soil donated to Olympia Ecosystems will support restoration and reforestation projects along the Deschutes River. This project protects and expands wildlife habitat, improves the ecological function of the floodplain and wetlands, and contributes to a cleaner and healthier Puget Sound.
The Land
The Deschutes River Preserve, located just a few miles south of Olympia in Thurston County, boasts a diverse landscape, including Douglas-fir forests, forested floodplains, upland prairie grasslands, and extensive wetland areas. Species that call the preserve home include elk, beaver, juvenile salmonids, a variety of amphibian species, river otters, coyotes, black-tailed deer, and a broad range of bird species.
Development along the Lower Deschutes watershed contributes to habitat loss, the spread of invasive species, increased stormwater runoff, and deterioration of water quality, leading to dramatic decreases in Coho salmon and companion species. Protecting and restoring the Deschutes River Preserve reverses the environmental decline while fostering a thriving environment for the people and wildlife who call this region home.
Recompose Land Partner Program Guiding Vision
A mission to connect humanity to the natural world guides our work to offer a death care service rooted in nature. As part of that commitment, we partner with nonprofit organizations to protect and regenerate ecosystems through conservation, rewilding, and other restoration practices. These land partners receive soil donated from Recompose clients to use in projects that benefit the land they steward.
We cultivate partnerships with collaborative organizations recognized as community leaders with excellent reputations. Recompose and our land partners share a common interest in connecting the human experience with the natural environment and recognize the use of soil from human composting to strengthen this connection. We prioritize partnerships with organizations that demonstrate strong internal systems, effective communication, and a stable team.
