Help Bring Recompose to Oregon

We need your help to legalize the Recompose process in Oregon. Please submit your letter of support by 3pm PT on Sunday, February 28.

Bringing Natural Organic Reduction to Oregon

Recompose is partnering with Representative Pam Marsh, House District 5, to bring forward HB 2574 to expand the ecological death care options available to Oregonians.

If passed, HB 2574 will legalize Recompose’s process, natural organic reduction, in Oregon. This bill will also formalize alkaline hydrolysis (or water cremation) into law as a method of disposition in Oregon. While alkaline hydrolysis  is already allowable under Oregon Administrative Rules, it is not currently in statute, so HB 2574 adds the existing rule to Oregon Revised Statutes. You can read the bill and follow its progress here on the Oregon State Legislature’s website: HB2574.

On Monday, March 1, the House Committee on Business and Labor will hold a public hearing to consider the bill. Public support will be critical to moving this proposed legislation out of the committee for a vote by the full legislature. Please see below for how to submit your letter of support by this Sunday, February 28 at 3pm PT.

If you miss Sunday’s deadline, there will be more opportunities to support the bill as it moves through the legislature. If you have any questions, please email Representative Marsh at

Thank you for helping bring ecological death care to Oregon!

Suggested text (to copy/paste and personalize):

Dear Chair Holvey and Members of the Committee,

I, [your name] am pleased to offer my support for HB 2574. This legislation would allow a natural disposition of remains by natural organic reduction (NOR), gently converting human remains into soil in an accelerated process.

[Personalize with information about why you believe this option is important for Oregon, such as why you or your loved ones want to choose these options for themselves]

Oregonians are looking for more sustainable death care options. HB 2574 would create an additional option for death care practice that is more environmentally-friendly and sustainable. For the above reasons, I ask for your support of this important legislation.
