Norma Meyer
March 14, 1935 – December 24, 2025
Norma Conrad Meyer, age 90, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, and globe-trotting adventurer embarked on her final journey on December 24, 2025. Born on March 14, 1935, in New York, NY, Norma was a first-generation American born to German parents, Sophie Olson Conrad and Johannes Otto Conrad.
Norma’s passion for the arts was fueled both by a variety of needlework she learned from her mother, the music and theater that living in New York offered, and her innate curiosity to create throughout her life. Norma’s gifts to create, educate, share stories, and make people laugh touched the lives of her family, students, and countless others.
Norma’s life-long love of travel was inspired by her first solo trip across the Atlantic Ocean to Germany in 1955 on an ocean liner. There she met German family members, studied and made life-long friends. Her detailed travel journals, including letters home from her first voyage, tell of her adventures to numerous destinations throughout her life.
In 1958, Norma married Don Meyer and moved from New York, NY to Fair Haven, MI. Norma then graduated from Michigan State University after also getting college credit at Hunter College and Columbia University in NY. In 1960, Norma and Don bought a home in Marine City, MI. Her first job as a teacher was on Harsen’s Island, MI teaching Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades at the same time. She retired from Michigan Public Schools after a 30-year career, mainly with 7th and 8th graders, at Marysville Intermediate School.
Norma’s German upbringing fueled a strong work ethic and a re-use and recycle attitude far before it was popularized. This influenced her daily living practices so much so that her family encouraged her to start a blog called the Chintzy Geezer.
Norma spent her early retirement as a volunteer with River District Hospital, an adult literacy program, and mission trips. She loved to attend the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theater, and the Shaw Festival, as well as garden and play bridge. Norma spent the last four years living near her family in North Carolina and they are thankful for the loving care she received from the staff at Forrest Ridge Assisted Living in West Jefferson, NC.
Norma is survived by her daughter, Heidi (Meyer) Parker, granddaughters, Paige and Abby Henderson, sister in-law, Pat Conrad, and many friends she considers family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, brother John Conrad, and sister Elsbeth Conrad Crowe.
Norma’s spirit can be described as witty, intelligent, friendly, feisty, silly, and resilient. Enjoy this story to commemorate her 90th birthday. To remember Norma, the family encourages acts of kindness, especially sharing a good story or joke to make someone smile.
There will be a celebration of life (virtual & in-person) on March 14, 2026. Contact her daughter, Heidi, for details. If you care to donate in honor of Norma, please consider the St. Clair Art Association or the Ashe County Community Foundation.
