New York State became the sixth U.S. state to legalize human composting.
New Yorkers and New York lovers: Governor Hochul signed a382 into law late December 30, 2022.
Background
For a second year, Assemblymember Amy Paulin (D-Scarsdale) led Assembly Bill A382 to legalize natural organic reduction in New York. The Senate version of the bill, S5535, was sponsored by Senator Leroy Comrie. The bills passed Assembly (61 aye/2 nay) and Senate (64 aye/2 nay), and were signed by the Governor late December 30th, 2022.
A Small Note
Recompose founder and CEO, Katrina Spade’s idea to create a human composting system began years ago when she was in grad school for architecture. Her initial design was for a building in NYC where humans would be transformed into soil. So in a way, this bill means that the idea of human composting will get to return home.
